ECHO & NARCISSUS

| C h a p t e r  ε  |
| E c h o  &  N a r c i s s u s
|

“CURSED BY THE QUEEN OF THE GODS HERA, MOUNTAIN NYMPH ECHO LOST HER VOICE AND COULD ONLY REPEAT THE LAST WORDS SPOKEN BY SOMEONE ELSE. ONE DAY, ECHO SAW THE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG MAN NARCISSUS IN THE FOREST, AND FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM AT FIRST SIGHT. SHE WAS VERY IN LOVE, BUT BECAUSE SHE COULD NOT EXPRESS HER AFFECTION IN A PROPER WAY, THE LOVE AFFAIR ENDED IN MISUNDERSTANDING AND REGRET. COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN, ECHO FADED FROM EXISTENCE AND HER BODY WITHERED AWAY. ALL THAT REMAINED OF HER WAS HER VOICE, UTTERING THE NAMEOF NARCISSUS.

WE THINK THAT IF WE CROSS MOUNTAINS AND SEAS, AND FOLLOW THE GOLDEN THREAD, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND THE IMAGINARY EXIT. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES BECAUSE OF A TINY YELLOW FLOWER BY THE LAKE, WE DESPERATELY TAKE OFF OUR WAXEN WINGS AND THROW AWAY THE GOLDEN THREAD IN OUR HANDS. WE BURY OUR HEADS IN A YELLOW ROSE THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO US. WE ONLY CARE ABOUT SATISFYING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS, AND EVEN IF WE FORGET ABOUT OUR DIRECTION, WE STILL WISH TO REGARD THAT RIPPLELESS LAKE AS OUR DESTINATION...

“I OFFER YOU THE MEMORY OF A YELLOW ROSE SEEN AT SUNSET, YEARS BEFORE YOU WERE BORN.” — IN POEM “WHAT CAN I HOLD YOU WITH?” BY JORGE LUIS BORGES”

 CHAPTER ζ -
JUDGEMENT OF PARIS

| C h a p t e r  ζ |
| J u d g e m e n t  o f  P a r i s
|

“MAYHEM BROKE OUT WHEN GODDESSES LAID CLAIM TO THE GOLDEN APPLE THAT BEARS THE INSCRIPTION “KALLISTI” (TO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL). THE RESPONSIBILITY TO JUDGE WHO WAS THE FAIREST FELL ON THE MORTAL PRINCE PARIS OF TROY. ATHENA, THE GODDESS OF WISDOM, PROMISED ENDLESS WISDOM AND TACTICAL SKILLS IN WAR. HERA, THE QUEEN OF GODS, OFFERED KINGLY POWER. BUT IN THE END, PARIS CHOSE APHRODITE, THE GODDESS OF LOVE AND BEAUTY, AS THE FAIREST OF ALL AFTER SHE PROMISED HIM THE LOVE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN THE WORLD. THIS INCIDENT BECAME A CATALYST FOR THE TROJAN WAR, INDIRECTLY TRIGGERING THE GREATEST TRAGEDY IN ANCIENT GREEK HISTORY.

IF WE COULD PREDICT THE FUTURE, WOULD PARIS HAVE ACCEPTED APHRODITE’S GIFT? WOULD THE THREE GODDESSES HAVE COMPETED FOR THE GOLDEN APPLE? EVEN IF THEY COULD CHOOSE AGAIN, WOULD THE ENDING STILL BE THE SAME? IN SUCH CHAOS, IS THERE A RIGHT CHOICE?

RATHER THAN DESIRING SOMEONE, LONGING FOR INTANGIBLE LOVE IS A BLIND ALLEY. PERHAPS A WILLING DECISION IS ALSO A DESTINED YEARNING.”

GARDEN OF HESPERIDES

“IN THE FAR RECESSES OF THE WORLD, THERE WAS A SACRED GARDEN, GUARDED BY NOT ONLY THE HUNDRED-HEADED DRAGON LADON, BUT ALSO THE HESPERIDES AND ATLAS, THE TITAN WHO WAS CONDEMNED TO HOLD UP THE SKY FOR ETERNITY. TOGETHER, THEY LOOKED AFTER THE SACRED GOLDEN APPLE TREE. IT WAS LIKE HEAVEN THERE—EVERYTHING LOOKED EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL. GOLDEN APPLES WERE SACRED, BUT ONCE THEY WERE TAKEN AWAY, THEIR HOLY EXISTENCE WOULD TURN INTO BAD OMEN.

HESIOD’S THEOGONY 744: “IN THE DEPTHS OF THE DARK EARTH, AT THE END OF THE WORLD, GUARDING THE GOLDEN APPLES.”

LED BY DECISION AND DESTINY, WE FUMBLE IN THE DARK ALONG WITH A GOLDEN THREAD, AND ARRIVE AT THIS MAGNIFICENT PARADISE. PERHAPS THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A DESTINATION, BUT MAYBE IT IS ALSO AN ILLUSION FROM CHAOS.”
